Hmm lets see...
I'm bored, so let me comment on the uh, wonderful political system Singapore has.
Don't worry though, my ass isn't itchy for punishment or w/e...
Let's be frank. Singapore, is a best, a semi-authoritarian country. Looking at the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, it is obvious that Singapore is lacking some of these, including the right to strike and such. We do not even have proper Workers' Unions ( at least none that I know of :P )
On top of that, if we look carefully, Singapore can be classified as a one-party state. Why? Because what opposition is there to the PAP? None really. The other parties have yet to really challenge to PAP's popularity. Hence, the PAP has dominated Singapore up till now.
BUT, to be honest, all this is NESCESSARY. Why? In a country like Singapore where we are totally dependant on humans as our one and only resource, banning strikes is a very practical thing to do. A strike could cause work and production to come to a standstill. On top of the money that will be wasted to bring things back into order and the cost of the damages, millions of dollars will be lost in the form of deals lost and such.
And in Singapore, being the small country it is, the chaos that would be caused by the changing of party and parliament would be counter-productive. I don't think I'll go into that though.
On top of all this, the PAP has done a good job. Lee Kuan Yew, the Minister Mentor, has done what other countries have deemed as impossible: he has transformed Singapore from a slum to a industrialized, modern ( rich even ) state in the short span of 40 years. No doubt Singapore's small size has helped tremendously, but it is still impressive.
By banning gambling dens and such in the past, the PAP has also removed potential threats to the workforce in the form of gambling addiction. The strict fines imposed for littering and such have made many tourists deem Singapore as 'clean and green' ( although i really beg to differ ) and has made life much more cleaner and hygienic. Many more examples exist, but I don't feel like writing :).
Lastly, who cares about politics really. The auntie in the coffee shop is probably more interested to know if she has struck 4D or ToTo than to worry that striking is against the law. And the majority of the students ( I generalize here ) are more interested in how much allowance they get a week than what human rights they do not have. So, just sit back and enjoy life.
Gosh that sounded like some hippy MSN screen name.
